Description

Coarse Fibre Door Mat – Brown Squares
This door mat features a coarse, bristly fibre surface arranged in a pattern of brown squares, giving it a rustic, organic appeal. The fibre is likely derived from natural materials such as coir or a stiff synthetic equivalent, both of which are excellent at dislodging caked mud and dirt from boot soles. The brown tones are earthy and grounding, naturally masking the very soil the mat collects.

  • Core benefits: Despite its rugged texture, the mat is not painful to walk on; the fibre has a firm but slightly springy quality. The backing, which may be vinyl or rubber, has a granular texture that keeps the mat stationary on smooth or rough surfaces. Water and mud are scraped off and held within the fibre structure, and the mat can be aired or shaken to release debris. It dries relatively quickly when placed in a well‑ventilated area.
  • Material: Coarse natural fibre, often coir (coconut husk) or a hard‑wearing synthetic fibre, set into a sturdy backing that provides weight and grip.
  • Thickness: Medium to thick, allowing the fibres to stand upright for maximum scraping effectiveness. The thickness should still allow most doors to pass over, but it is advisable to check clearance if the door sits very low.

Structure and detailing: The mat is constructed with densely packed fibres that are cut to a uniform height or arranged in tufted squares. The brown colour may vary slightly across the surface due to the natural material, adding to its organic character. Edges are often bound with a narrow canvas or vinyl strip to keep the mat from shedding.

Usage scenarios: Best placed outside the front or back door, in a porch, or in a boot room. It works particularly well in rural settings, farmhouses, and cottages where outdoor mud is a frequent challenge. Some also use it in a greenhouse or shed entry to keep soles clean.

Cleaning and care: Allow mud to dry, then beat the mat against a hard surface or use a stiff brush. The mat should not be soaked, as excessive water can cause natural fibres to rot or the backing to weaken. If necessary, a light rinse with a hose is acceptable if the mat is stood up to drain and dry completely. Do not machine wash.

Important notes: Due to hand‑measurement, a small size variation is possible. Fresh coir mats may shed a few loose fibres upon first use; this is normal and will reduce over time. A natural earthy scent may be present for a few days after unpacking; airing outdoors is recommended.
